There have to be three great food experiences you’re looking
for when you visit Italy: pizza, pasta and gelato. Standard, right?
Easier said than done. Especially when you’re vegan. Don’t
fret though, I ploughed on through and did the hard work required, by working
my way through as many Florence-based veggie/vegan establishments as I could
manage in a week of visiting this most Lilyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03706138517160628323noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4096867674318325294.post-17775371226009429582013-05-29T21:48:00.002+01:002013-05-29T21:48:35.939+01:00Arundel: Gaskyns
Vegan in Arundel you say? I don't know, maybe Arundel was closer to Brighton in my mind, but I just expected it to have more vegan options available.... people who actually knew what you meant when you spoke the word. But no.
Just try a Google search for 'vegan Arundel' - it doesn't yield many results. Apart from one place - Gaskyns. I went to Arundel once before without having written the Lilyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03706138517160628323noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4096867674318325294.post-466183305374797902013-05-26T19:08:00.002+01:002013-05-26T19:08:21.018+01:00Marrakech: Earth Cafe
First things first - you need to try the orange juice sold by any of the vendors in the Djemma el Fna! It’s the most amazing orange juice ever, squeezed fresh from blood oranges and cheap, cheap, cheap at about 35p a glass.
Secondly, let’s clear something up. There are actually two branches of Earth Café in Marrakech. Apparently there used to be one in Essaouira but this has now Lilyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03706138517160628323noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4096867674318325294.post-46696820274198904602013-05-26T18:57:00.003+01:002013-05-26T18:58:30.242+01:00Essaouira: Shyadma's
Vegan food of the number twenty - special Moroccan! Healthy food - only vegetarian. Gotta love signs abroad :)
Shyadma’s is one of only a couple of purely vegetarian restaurants in Morocco. It’s in lovely, laid-back Essaouira and this laid-back fashion certainly made its way into the restaurant. Situated in a sun trap of a courtyard at 20 Rue Laalouj in Place el KhaymaLilyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03706138517160628323noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4096867674318325294.post-53875680329852653902013-05-26T18:46:00.003+01:002013-05-26T18:49:50.228+01:00Chocolate Orange Cake
Totally suitable for when you’re craving cake, have no-one to share with and need to eat it all on your own. I did.
275g self raising flour
40g cocoa powder
1 tsp vanilla essence
200g caster sugar
100ml vegetable oil
200ml orange juice (or water if for some reason you don't want a chocolate orange cake!)
And for the icing:
50g vegetable spread e.g. Pure
30g cocoa powder

I never really thought it would be possible to make a vegan bakewell tart, but I'm so glad I tried because it is possible, in fact, it came out perfectly first time and was soooo good I just had to polish it all off..... by myself!
I started by making a shortcrust pastry base by mixing together 100g plain flour, 25g icing sugar and then rubbing in 50g vegan margarine until the mix Lilyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03706138517160628323noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4096867674318325294.post-20144945803378521762012-04-29T11:51:00.001+01:002013-08-17T12:19:10.421+01:00Wagamama
Wagamama is a good chain restaurant option for vegans everywhere, where there is actually a choice from several suitable dishes.
The other great thing is that, with restaurants all over the world, you may have a chance of being able to get a vegan meal in places where they’re hard to find otherwise. I ate at the Wagamama in Malta and my meal was exactly the same as in England - not Lilyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03706138517160628323noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4096867674318325294.post-90494207780858607042012-04-26T20:53:00.001+01:002013-05-26T16:51:55.920+01:00Exeter: The Plant Cafe
What a delight. I was lucky enough to have reason to visit Exeter fairly frequently over a period of nine months and this was without a doubt my first port of call.
The Plant Cafe is situated in a wonderful location overlooking the green in front of Exeter cathedral. The interior is very cute and cosy but if I'm honest, can be a little cramped. There are tables outside or you can get your Lilyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03706138517160628323noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4096867674318325294.post-70959875464835276162012-04-21T19:20:00.001+01:002013-05-26T14:02:56.455+01:00Gourmet Burger Kitchen
Was a little surprised not to be able to find any reviews or endorsements of the vegan credentials of Gourmet Burger Kitchen online, so I decided to do a bit of investigation myself.By just turning up.It’s not often I employ this method. I became sick of eating plain jacket potatoes years ago.The staff were very friendly and welcoming and one of the waitresses told me she had a friend who Lilyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03706138517160628323noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4096867674318325294.post-72910844319042841922011-04-03T22:20:00.000+01:002013-05-26T13:59:09.043+01:00Lasagne
I always make Bolognese sauce in huge batches as it's so versatile and can be used for lots of different meals. Lasagne is one such meal and here it is.......
I am making the presumption here that people know how to make a Bolognese sauce – just fry up some chopped vegetables of your choice, I use onion and mushrooms normally, season, bang in a bag of vegemince and add plenty of chopped Lilyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03706138517160628323noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4096867674318325294.post-78659635306902229612011-03-18T18:51:00.002+00:002013-05-26T16:09:37.371+01:00Sweet Potato Stew
Apparently an African dish, but who cares where it's from when it tastes this good? This is really simple to make but quite different from your average stew, and, you'll be stronger than Popeye by the end of it, what with all that spinach.
1 onion
olive oil for frying
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
3 garlic cloves
3cm chunk of fresh ginger
350g sweet potato
1/2 pint tomato passata
1/2 pint vegetable Lilyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03706138517160628323noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4096867674318325294.post-8297105152286234272010-09-18T20:09:00.005+01:002013-05-26T16:17:09.351+01:00Lemon and Blackberry Slices
Oooooh, it’s like lemon meringue pie without the meringue. Which is fine by me, never much liked meringue anyway. Or, you can layer it up and have double flavours; later you can see a variation where I have used lemon and blackberry.
These are seriously good. I’d pay for one of these.
They are fairly simple to make also which is always a bit of a bonus.

So, I like posh broccoli. Bog-standard broccoli is much cheaper though and it makes a pretty tasty soup. I used to like all my soups heavy with potato, then I changed to a super light soup which was mostly water and now I've found a happy middle ground with a "cream of" soup.
1 large broccoli
1 large white onion
4 cloves garlic
olive oil
3/4 pint vegetable stock
1/4 pint soya Lilyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03706138517160628323noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4096867674318325294.post-41232443131093421232010-09-01T15:51:00.004+01:002013-05-26T16:24:21.626+01:00Apple and Blackberry Crumble
Oh yes, it’s that time of year again folks. Winter is drawing in on us and the last of the blackberries are waiting to be picked. I did my picking a few weeks ago and prepped them for the freezer. You need to wash them first, then lay them flat on a baking tray and freeze them individually, that way you won’t end up with one big frozen blob when you come to use them.
Don’t they look pretty? Lilyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03706138517160628323noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4096867674318325294.post-6612366715257530202010-08-16T13:49:00.002+01:002013-05-26T16:30:07.476+01:00Sticky Cinnamon Buns
Being a baker, working in a bakery, is a “profession,” “occupation,” “full-time job.” There is a reason for this. It needs full time! Baking is so satisfying but for special baked goods like these, you really need a whole afternoon.
It’s worth it though - as many people before me have claimed, it’s a labour of love for these bad boys.
I believe I originally found this recipe on Lilyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03706138517160628323noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4096867674318325294.post-46999214291840066432010-08-04T17:28:00.001+01:002013-05-26T16:32:28.579+01:00Chocolate Cookies
Now I’m sure there are a billion and one recipes out there for chocolate cookies. Doesn’t mean to say I don’t need one on my blog though, does it? This is just a regular recipe but I adapted it by chance one day, substituting a bit of normal flour for some rice flour and it made a whole lot of difference.
I often have trouble with cookies. They are either too crunchy or too soft, almost Lilyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03706138517160628323noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4096867674318325294.post-4224893322350783302010-07-23T12:21:00.001+01:002013-05-26T17:08:38.911+01:00Scones and Jam
Well, alright, just scones then, I haven't got around to making my own jam yet - one day, when I have my own garden and fruit trees!
Everyone loves scones - I wish there was a vegan clotted cream to add to the jam. Still, pretty good even without. Edit: See comments section - there is!

Simple, but the best things in life usually are!
Rock cakes are amazing because of that subtle spiciness, oooh it's like Christmas. They look so rustic and homely and I just want to make a cup of tea when they come out the oven and eat them all up while they're still warm and fresh.

This dish is really delicious and I just don't have a photo of it that does it justice. So you will have to use your imagination, and in return, I have provided you with a picture of some elephants wading through the Chobe river in Botswana.

Not just the inner Hebrides. I'm talking the OUTER Hebrides. 70 miles out to sea off the coast of Scotland, middle of nowhere. Now tell me, there is no way, absolutely no way, you would expect to find yourself a vegan meal?
BUT I DID!

Now I happen to know, from reading other vegan blogs out there, that vegans have a tendency to get very excited when they discover there is a vegan friendly restaurant in an area they are planning on visiting. In fact, if they are anything like me, they will actively seek such treasures out. It’s my vay-dar.
So, imagine my excitement when I discovered that on veggie-unfriendly Malta, Lilyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03706138517160628323noreply@blogger.com7
